| Summer Curriculum Overview | | It is with thoughtful and purposeful intent that Middle School Summer Session ALC curriculum was written to raise the academic achievement of Saint Paul students in the areas of Reading/ELA and Math. Teacher and student investment is key to making any curriculum effective. The Center for Academic Excellence has developed new curriculum frameworks for credit recovery and test preparation classes at the Middle and High School level. There will be mandatory trainings for teachers who will teach these courses. Teachers must be licensed in the area being taught to teach these courses. Curriculum frameworks will be distributed at the training sessions.

Reading Summer Curriculum The Center for Professional Development has created a unique and specific courses for Middle School ELA Summer Session. This course will be offered to incoming 7th graders as well as incoming 8th graders. It will encompass 6th and 7th grade standards. It will target very specific test skills, focusing on vocabulary and comprehension as well as writing. Throughout this course students will also be expected to read the class novel and do reflections specific to the skills being taught. The second part of the course is for credit recovery This course will have 3 components: skill building from the Kaplan series, novel reading and reflection and specific test preparation skills. Students will receive a credit if they: are present 80% of the time, complete their novel and daily reflections, turn in a cumulative writing piece that will be self, peer and teacher graded using a rubric and complete daily test prep activities. Students will self-select their novel from a list of choices.

Math Summer Curriculum John Benda with the help of three talented and experienced math teachers have created a new math curriculum for use at Middle School Summer Session. It targets very specific standards. The middle school math curriculum is designed to be project-based and connect math to students’ everyday life. Math sessions will be broken down into 3 parts. Each day will begin with skill-building, based on skills used in the project the day before followed by a hands-on group project designed to get kids thinking and manipulating, followed by a wrap-up and exchange of ideas. The curriculum will encompass both credit recovery as well as test preparation skills. Math grades/credit-earning will be based on the following three factors: 80% attendance, competency on weekly quizzes, participation and understanding on daily projects and pre/post assessments. These items will be marked by teachers daily for reviewal by the ALC office. It is crucial that students and teachers are held accountable to standards and that no free credits are awarded. No partial credit will be given.
